Spot the Dot is a non-profit organization working with artists, athletes, medical professionals, and skin cancer patients from around the world to raise awareness of melanoma and other types of skin cancer. The aim of the project is to encourage people to start a conversation with their loved ones (and their physician) about the importance of prevention and detection of skin cancer. All projects are managed by founder Marije Kruis.

International focus in 2023
This was a special year in which the founder of Spot the Dot, Marije Kruis took a sabbatical to be able to travel and collaborate internationally on skin cancer awareness campaigns.

Awards 2023

Winner of Best of Pharma Advertising 2023. Issued by Pharma Marketing Club Austria · June 2023. For our Do You campaign in the categories “multi-channel campaign”. Spot the Dot has been nominated for another 2 categories.

Top 5 for Inspire Skin Confidence. International Awards for Social Responsibility in Dermatology for the Check a Mole game. Application in collaboration with dr Göran van Rooijen.

Projects which have been realized in 2023

As a small NGO we are proud to state that with limited resources, we managed the following projects and we have seen a big increase in our reach and engagement worldwide. 

  • We’ve added new languages to our  game as well as our entire Spot the Dot website, most of our website is available now in English, Dutch, German, French, Spanish and Italian www.spotthedot.org
  • Opening of the Love Your Body Exhibition in Madrid, Spain February, 2023, and large local press campaign More info here Including spending one month locally to work close together with the team of the Clinica Dermatologica Internacional.
  • Opening of the Love Your Body Exhibition in Brescia, Italy in June 2023 More info here Including spending one month locally to work close together with the team of the Carolina Zani Melanoma Foundation. 
  • The very first Faster Than Skincancer Beach event, September in Belgium. A collaboration with Melanoompunt. More info here
  • Collaboration with 24 hospitals in Belgium, on social media and with banners inside all hospitals. As part of our game collaboration with MSD Belgium. 
  • Collaboration with Spaarne Gasthuis, hospital in the Netherlands: promotional rollups inside hospital showing the Check a Mole game 
  • One month in Spain to collaborate actively with Fundacion Piel Sana/ Academia Espanol Dermatologia Y venereologia on skin cancer awareness strategies in Spain.
  • Field visit to IVO in Valencia to brainstorm about awareness among young people in Spain
  • Our Draculina awareness short film was featured on the big screen during slash ½ film festival in May 
  • Organization of/attending educational initiatives in Granada at the day of Science together with the Fundacion Piel Sana/ Academia Espanol Dermatologia Y venereologia

Funds

We received €6000 from MSD Belgium for the localization of the check a mole game into French and development of the local campaign as well as translating our website into French. We received  €6000 from Cantabria Labs for the localization of the check a mole game into Spanish and the local awareness campaign as well as translating parts of our website to Spanish. We received €5.473,47 Euro from the Israeli Skin Cancer Foundation, to realize the localization of the check a mole game into Hebrew and for the development of the  local campaign. We received €540 from MSD Austria to pay for the feature of our Draculina film during the Slash film festival. We received €2000 Euro from Telefonica for the collaboration of raising awareness at an internal event. For the sales of skate decks we have generated  €300 and we have received another €300 euro of donations.

Faster Than Skincancer Belgium 2022

  • The preparation has continued for a big collaboration with the Belgian Melanoma Foundation (Melanoompunt be) and the launch of Faster Than Skincancer in Belgium. The event had to be postponed once more due to technical problems at the sky dive foundation. 
  • A skydive event is planned to take place in August 2023 on the Belgian beach
  • Five large Belgian sponsors are on board and we got to design Faster Than Skincancer Parachutes

Funds

This year we have kept the online shop closed due to a lack of resources. We received sponsorship of 4800 Euro from MSD Austria for the “Do You” campaign to cover parts of the costs of video and photoshoots, web design and graphic design. We received donations of 1300 Euro from the Italian foundation Associazione Contro Melanoma,  to realize the localisation of the Spot the Dot campaign into Italian.  This year we won a Patient Innovation Award (issued by Novartis Pharma GmbH), the prize money was 5000 Euro which was used to cover a part of the development of our Don’t Fade Away calendar tool.

Awards

  • In 2021 we have won the Patient Innovation Award for the concept of our “Check a Mole” game. We won 5000 euro, which has been used to produce the actual game.
  • In 2021 we have been nominated for two categories of the Goldenes Skalpell « Best of Pharma Advertising 2021 » Awards with our Faster Than Skincancer campaign.

  • We launched our own browser game in 3 languages, aiming to teach people of all ages the ABCDE method of skin cancer. www.spotthedot.org/game

The Night Belongs to Runners

Love your skin campaign

  • In 2021 we have launched a new campaign “Love your Body, Check your skin. Combining thematics such as body positivity, diversity, and skin cancer, explaining why it is important to talk about body positivity concerning skin cancer.  https://spotthedot.org/en/projects/self-love/
  • A big part of this campaign is built upon a large photoshoot directed by photographer Max Manavi-Huber
  • We asked dermatologists from several countries to write a testimonial about this campaign and we reached out to other skin cancer organizations, asking them to show more diversity in their visuals and talk more about skin cancer among people with darker skin tones.

Spot the Towel campaign

  • Together with the team from Schauthin Hautkrebs (Germany) we have produced a beach towel and launched a matching social media campaign (including professional photo and video shoots) in German and English.   • As part of the campaign we produced 1000 folded leaflets explaining the ABCDE’s of skincancer in English and German, these have been spread among dermatologists and ambassadors worldwide. 

Faster Than Skincancer campaign

Faster Than Skincancer Belgium 2022:

  • The preparation has started for a big collaboration with the Belgian Melanoma Foundation (Melanoompunt be) and the launch of Faster Than Skincancer in Belgium.

In total we sold spot the dot merchandising for the gross amount of 2862,- Euro in our spot the dot shop (www.spotthedot.org/shop). We received donations of 39,100 Euro from Novartis Pharma Gmbh in Austria and the Netherlands to realise the Faster Than Skincancer campaign launch in the Netherlands as well as to cover the costs for press work, webdesign, graphic design, video and photoshoots, production of merchandising, programming, game development, advertising for our awareness efforts. This year we won a Patient Innovation Award, the prize money was 5,000 Euro which was used to cover a part of the development of our Check-A-Mole game.

As a small NGO we are proud to state that in a challenging year, dealing with covid19, we have still managed the following projects and we have seen a big increase in our reach and engagement worldwide.

  • Main campaign: We launched a new big skin cancer awareness campaign: Faster Than Skincancer, including a campaign website in six languages, articles, photos, videos, a media campaign, collaboration with over 30 international ambassadors, additional social media channels and daily social media posts. (This campaign is a collaboration with Beton. Studio and cooperation partner Novartis)
  • Re-launch: on December 21 2020 we launched the winter edition of the Faster Than Skincancer campaign, with a renewed website design, new videos, articles, photos, media campaign, social media campaign and a collaboration with new athletes and medical experts.  (with cooperation partner Novartis)
  • More languages: Besides English, German and Dutch, we started to also make content available in an additional 3 languages: Spanish, Italian and French.
  • Mini campaign: NHL Communication students work on Faster Than Skincancer video material during their final university project
  • Mini campaign:Faster Than Skincancer cycling challenge in the Radbonus app

Due to covid19 a certain amount of planned events and projects had to be cancelled. In the first months of the year we planned a really exciting art exhibition and festival in the beautiful WUK projektraum in the heart of Vienna. Planning for a cycling awareness event also had to be postponed.

Funds

In total we have received 261,- Euro in donations from Spot the Dot members and other individuals as well as additional product sponsoring from la roche-posay and Vans Vienna. We have sold spot the dot merchandising for the gross amount of 2386,- Euro in our spot the dot shop (gross amount. incl shipping, packaging). We have received a donation of 16,760 Euro from Novartis Pharma S.P.A. to realise the brand new Faster Than Skincancer campaign and cover the costs for webdesign, graphic design, video and photoshoots, production of merchandising etc.

Spot the Dot: Verein zur Förderung des Bewusstseins für verschiedene Arten von Hautkrebs Talgasse 4/25 1150 Vienna, Austria ZVR-Zahl: 1717374860
Spot the Dot is a foundation working with artists from around the world to raise awareness of melanoma and other types of skin cancer. The aim of the projects is to encourage people to start a conversation with their loved ones (and their physician) about the importance of prevention and detection of skin cancer.

Projects which have been realised in 2019

  • Participation and winning of two ‘Goldene Skalpell’ (Best of Pharma Marketing 2019) Awards!
  • Launch of brand new website, in collaboration with BLAEK design agency
  • New overview of press clippings on our website in 3 languages https://spotthedot.org/en/press
  • Social media campaign with photographer Doris Dotz during May Melanoma Awareness Month 
  • Developing 4 new sticker designs with various artists + sending out stickers to advocates all around the world
  • Rebel against skin cancer street: eight international artists painted a street long mural in Vienna at the Schwendergasse
  • Feature of the mural in Vienna Street Art Guide Volume II
  • Giving a social media workshop to Austrian patient organizations (hosted by Novartis Austria) 
  • Giving several presentations during a two day visit about the importance of working with small patient organizations and the need of raising skin cancer awareness at Novartis HQ in Basel

Funds

In total we have received 950,- Euro in donations from Spot the Dot members and other individuals as well as additional product sponsoring for events from Marc Inbane, Beyer & Söhne and Montana Cans. An additional income of 3810,- EUR came in out of participation of patient advocacy events and hosting workshops by our founder Marije Kruis in the name of the Verein. We sold € 657,78  EUR via our webshop.
