On June 9-11, 2023 Carolina Zani Melanoma Foundation ETS  and Spot the Dot open the “Love your Body” photography exhibition, celebrating the launch of Italy’s first educational skin cancer game. An initiative by melanoma patient and founder of the non-profit Spot the Dot, Marije Kruis, aiming to encourage body positivity and awareness of skin cancer.

A growing problem

Each year more and more people are diagnosed with melanoma and other types of skin cancer. As of 2022, almost 170 thousand people were living with a diagnosis of melanoma in Italy. The majority of those diagnosed were women, with 89,800 cases. Skin cancer is one of the most treatable forms of cancer, with a very good recovery rate. However, public awareness of the symptoms of skin cancer is currently low, meaning opportunities for vital early detection can be missed.  This is what the Carolina Zani Melanoma Foundation ETS and Spot the Dot try to change by joining forces in their quest to raise awareness of skin cancer.

Italy’s first skin cancer game

June 9 marks the launch of the brand new educational browser game “Attenti al Neo” in Italian. This game is developed by Spot the Dot, in collaboration with dermatologists, to teach people the ABCDE method of doing self-checks of the skin to promote early detection of skin cancer. The game is free and available for everyone to play on their phone, by going to www.spotthedot.org/game

Love Your Body

Marije Kruis, melanoma patient and founder of Spot the Dot,  reached out to awarded photographer and art director Max Manavi-Huber to create a series of photogaphs that challenges the viewer to think about the relationship they have with their own skin. Do we take better care of our body if we truly feel good in our own skin? Do people know that skin cancer does not discriminate? People of all age, gender and color, can get skin cancer. We should all take good care of our skin and protect it from getting sun damaged. We should all spot our dots!

Marije Kruis

Marije Kruis, founder of Spot the Dot was diagnosed with melanoma at a young age herself and realised she and everyone around her had many misconceptions about skin cancer. „A few years ago a friend pointed out a tiny spot on my lower leg and told me to have a dermatologist look at it. I took up his advice and to make a long (medical) story short, that spot which looked so innocent to me, was already a far progressed melanoma. My life would never be the same anymore. In the following year, I heard so many misconceptions about skin cancer from people around me, which made me realize that there is such a big need to raise more awareness around this topic. Hearing these misconceptions motivated me to start my own foundation“. — Marije Kruis
