When the Music is Loud, the Message Should Be Too?

Sonic Blast is no ordinary beach festival. Its lineup pulses with stoner rock, post-punk, synth, and doom genres known for their raw energy and immersive sound. The visuals are bold, the crowd embraces edge, and the vibe demands an equally fearless approach. Spot the Dot rose to the challenge.

Instead of quiet reminders, the team went all in with a statement impossible to ignore: “Fuck the Sun.” The phrase appeared across merchandise, flyers, stickers, fans, and temporary tattoos. The design wasn’t intended as pure provocation—it was carefully crafted to harmonize with the festival’s aesthetic while driving home an urgent sun-safety message.

The impact was instant. Festivalgoers smiled, sparked conversations, and shared genuine moments of connection over the bold campaign. It wasn’t just about getting attention; it was about delivering life-saving advice in a way that resonated with the environment and its audience.

This campaign is the latest chapter in Spot the Dot’s 10-year journey to raise awareness about skin cancer—through everything from art exhibitions and street murals to educational talks and collaborative, unconventional projects.

The takeaway? Awareness doesn’t always have to whisper. Sometimes, the most powerful messages are the ones shouted over the music. Spot the Dot proves that when you dare to be loud, bold, and a little unexpected, you can make an impact that lasts long after the final encore.

To raise skin cancer awareness within the surf community, Spot the Dot partnered with California-based Vampire Surf Club on a special awareness project focused on early detection and self skin checks. Surfers spend long hours in intense sun exposure, making skin cancer awareness especially relevant. Together, we developed a compact ABCDE guide for self skin checks, created specifically for the surf community, practical, accessible, and easy to share among surf buddies.

As part of this collaboration, Spot the Dot founder Marije Kruis wrote a personal article for Vampire Surf Club, connecting lived experience with education and prevention.

Do you know when prevention fails, catching skin cancer early is crucial and highly treatable? Taking note of changes in your skin is key.

What can you do?

The good news is that when diagnosed early, the survival chances are high. Therefore keep the following in mind:

1. UV light is the most preventable risk factor for all skin cancers so we encourage everyone to protect their skin from harmful UV light.
Use sunscreen with a sun protection factor 30 or higher
Wear protective clothing
Seek the shade

2. Examine your skin head-to-toe every month. Self exams should NOT replace the annual skin exam performed by a physician BUT they offer the best chance of detecting the early warning signs of skin cancer. If you notice any change in an existing mole or discover a new one that looks suspicious be safe and see a doctor.
Be safe: see a doctor for a skin check. Your physician will thoroughly check your skin, especially any conspicuous marks you found during the self-exam.

3. Make sure to plan a yearly skin check!

The creatives behind the campaign

Samira and Max are creative partners to people and brands, telling visual stories and having fun. Samira is a scriptwriter, director, and editor. Max is a photographer and cameraman. They joined forces with Spot the Dot founder Marije on this new skin cancer awareness campaign.

Max & Samira on their concept: „In the visuals of this campaign we use the dot as a symbol for a suspicious mole. We build oversized and neon-colored dots and took it to an exaggerated and absurd level to catch people’s attention. Whereas in our visuals the dot is so clearly visible, we challenge the viewer to ask themselves if they would so easily find a suspicious mole on their own skin. Do they even spot their own dots? We believe raising awareness of skin cancer does not have to be a heavy-hearted topic, after all when you catch skin cancer at an early stage, the chances of survival are nearly 99%.”

Why the night belongs to runners

To us, running is much more than just exercise. It’s a true passion. We live it, we breathe it and we can feel it running through our veins. Despite training for our goals, there is no such thing as an „off-season” for us. We run after a hard-working day. We run when our legs are tired from the day before. We run through adverse weather and rugged terrain. And we run when it’s dark, early in the morning or late at night. After all, this is a good thing. It protects us from harmful UV light and reduces the risk of skin cancer. That’s why the night belongs to runners.

Running from the sun

UV light is the most preventable risk factor for all skin cancers. The sun emits two types of ultraviolet rays–UVA and UVB. Both kinds of radiation can lead to skin cancer. Runners and others who like to be outdoors are especially at risk, particularly when the sun is high and their arms and legs are bare. And during many endurance events such as marathons and triathlons, competitors often spend time in the sun when ultraviolet rays are strongest–between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

But even clouds, water, and wintry weather don’t lessen the chances of sun exposure. Most dangerous ultraviolet rays penetrate clouds and water. These rays also can bounce off snow and water, which increases their intensity. Cold weather won’t shield you, except for the fact that you’ll probably be wearing more clothing.

We encourage everyone to protect their skin in a way that suits them best. For example:

1. Use sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher
2.Wear protective clothing
3.Seek the shade

After run skin check

It’s important to examine your skin head-to-toe at least once a month. Ideally, you build a routine to check your skin right after your after-run shower (learn here how to do that). Self-exams should NOT replace an annual skin exam performed by a physician BUT they offer the best chance of detecting the early warning signs of skin cancer. If you notice any changes in an existing mole or discover a new one that looks suspicious, be safe and consult a doctor. Remember, melanoma spreads relatively quickly and survival with metastatic melanoma is very limited. Early detection can be crucial and can save your life.

Spot the Dot

Spot the Dot is a small NGO, founded by melanoma patient Marije Kruis. She works with artists and athletes from around the world to raise awareness of melanoma and other types of skin cancer. Check your skin

Examine your skin from head to toe every month. A self-check is not a replacement for an annual skin examination by a doctor, but it is your best chance to detect the first signs of skin cancer at an early stage.

If you notice a change in an existing mole or spot a new one that looks suspicious, don’t wait — speak with a doctor as soon as possible. A doctor will carefully examine your skin, especially any unusual moles you identified during your self-check.
