Después de crear materiales educativos para hospitales de toda Europa a principios de este año, Spot the Dot apuesta este verano por un enfoque más directo. Junto con Branca Studio de Barcelona, la organización ha creado el pañuelo y el abanico Fuck the Sun para llevar la concienciación sobre el cáncer de piel a la temporada de festivales.

Tras su colaboración en Sonic Blast Festival, en Portugal, en 2025, Spot the Dot y Branca Studio quisieron crear algo que la gente realmente quisiera llevar, usar y comentar en festivales de música alternativa de toda Europa. Más que simple merchandising, estos artículos están pensados para iniciar conversaciones. Su mensaje llamativo capta la atención y abre la puerta a hablar de un tema que afecta cada año a más personas: el cáncer de piel.

El mensaje es sencillo. Fuck the Sun. Fuck Skin Cancer. Protege tu piel usando protector solar, buscando la sombra y cubriéndote con ropa adecuada, como un pañuelo, una gorra o mangas largas. Spot the Dot. Revisa tu piel de la cabeza a los pies una vez al mes. Si ves una mancha o un lunar nuevo o que ha cambiado, consulta a tu médico.

Cada pañuelo y abanico Fuck the Sun incluye un folleto informativo y una pegatina de Spot the Dot para seguir difundiendo el mensaje mucho después de que termine el festival.

To raise skin cancer awareness within the surf community, Spot the Dot partnered with California-based Vampire Surf Club on a special awareness project focused on early detection and self skin checks. Surfers spend long hours in intense sun exposure, making skin cancer awareness especially relevant. Together, we developed a compact ABCDE guide for self skin checks, created specifically for the surf community, practical, accessible, and easy to share among surf buddies.

As part of this collaboration, Spot the Dot founder Marije Kruis wrote a personal article for Vampire Surf Club, connecting lived experience with education and prevention.

¿Cuando la música es fuerte, el mensaje también debería serlo?

Sonic Blast no es un festival de playa cualquiera. Su cartel vibra con stoner rock, post-punk, synth y doom, géneros conocidos por su energía cruda y su sonido envolvente. Los visuales son potentes, el público abraza lo alternativo y el ambiente exige un enfoque igual de audaz. Spot the Dot estuvo a la altura del reto.

En lugar de recordatorios discretos, el equipo apostó por una declaración imposible de ignorar: “Fuck the Sun”. La frase apareció en merchandising, folletos, pegatinas, abanicos y tatuajes temporales. El diseño no buscaba provocar por provocar, sino integrarse cuidadosamente en la estética del festival mientras transmitía un mensaje urgente de protección solar.

El impacto fue inmediato. Los asistentes sonrieron, iniciaron conversaciones y compartieron momentos genuinos de conexión gracias a la campaña. No se trataba solo de llamar la atención, sino de transmitir un consejo que salva vidas de una forma coherente con el entorno y su público.

Esta campaña es el capítulo más reciente del recorrido de 10 años de Spot the Dot para concienciar sobre el cáncer de piel, a través de exposiciones de arte, murales urbanos, charlas educativas y proyectos colaborativos y poco convencionales.

¿La conclusión? La concienciación no siempre tiene que susurrar. A veces, los mensajes más poderosos son los que se gritan por encima de la música. Spot the Dot demuestra que cuando te atreves a ser fuerte, valiente y un poco inesperado, puedes generar un impacto que perdura mucho después del último bis.

«The night runners» collection

Willpower Running & Spot the Dot are joining forces to raise awareness about skin cancer among runners worldwide. €10 from every shirt sold from “The Night Belongs To Runners” collection goes to Spot the Dot. The designs are inspired by Patti Smith’s song Because the Night and by the fact that there are many ways we can protect our skin from sun damage, such as running during hours when UV levels are low (for example, in the evening or at night). We hope these garments will serve as conversation starters to encourage others to perform regular skin checks and protect their skin from UV damage.

Something must be (run)done

Every year, more and more people are diagnosed with melanoma and other forms of skin cancer. Skin cancer is now among the top three most common cancers in young adults. Many people do not take precautions to prevent skin cancer or monitor changes in their skin, even though early detection can be crucial.

Why the night belongs to runners

Running is much more than just a sport to us. It is a true passion. We live it, breathe it in, and feel it flowing through our veins. Even though we train for our personal goals, there is no such thing as an “off-season” for us. We run after a hard day of work. We run when our legs are tired from the day before. We run through bad weather and rough terrain. And we run when it’s dark, early in the morning or late at night.

This is actually a good thing. It protects us from harmful UV light and reduces the risk of skin cancer. That’s why the night belongs to runners.

Running from the sun

UV light is one of the biggest — yet avoidable — risk factors for all forms of skin cancer. The sun emits two types of ultraviolet radiation: UVA and UVB. Both types can lead to skin cancer. Runners and others who spend a lot of time outdoors are especially at risk, particularly when the sun is high and their arms and legs are exposed.

During many endurance sports events, such as marathons and triathlons, participants often spend hours in the sun when ultraviolet rays are strongest — between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM.

That’s why we encourage everyone to protect their skin from harmful UV light:

Use sunscreen with SPF30 or higher
Wear protective clothing
Seek shade
Go outside when the UV index is at its lowest

Check your skin

Examine your skin from head to toe every month. A self-check is not a replacement for an annual skin examination by a doctor, but it is your best chance to detect the first signs of skin cancer at an early stage.

If you notice a change in an existing mole or spot a new one that looks suspicious, don’t wait — speak with a doctor as soon as possible. A doctor will carefully examine your skin, especially any unusual moles you identified during your self-check.
